Why Repair or Replace Window Screens?

Enjoy the Breeze Without the Bugs

A good screen lets fresh air flow through your home while blocking mosquitoes, flies, and even small rodents. Torn mesh or bent frames leave gaps that pests can exploit, forcing you to keep windows closed or endure unwelcome visitors.

Improve Energy Efficiency

Proper screens allow you to ventilate your home naturally, reducing reliance on air conditioning. Repairing screens also keeps out dust and pollen, which is especially beneficial for allergy sufferers.

Protect Your Investment

Damaged screens can lead to warped frames or cracked glass if left unattended. Repairs cost far less than full window replacement and extend the life of your windows.

Upgrade Your Experience

Modern screening materials include solar mesh for heat reduction and pet-resistant mesh for homes with animals. Replacing worn-out screens is an opportunity to choose better-performing options.

Our Professional Service Process

Family Hardware provides professional window screen repair and fabrication at both our Cape Coral and Fort Myers stores. Here's what to expect when you bring in a screen:

1

Step 1: Assessment

Professional Inspection

We inspect the frame and mesh to determine whether a simple patch, new mesh, or complete rebuild is needed. Small holes (up to about ¼ inch) may be sealed with clear adhesive; larger holes or torn corners usually require new mesh or a frame rebuild.

2

Step 2: Frame & Spline Check

Component Evaluation

The spline (rubber cord that holds the mesh in place) often dries out or stretches with age. Replacing it ensures a snug fit. If the frame is bent or broken, we can fabricate a new one to match your window.

3

Step 3: Rescreening

Professional Installation

We cut new mesh to size and install it using a roller tool to press the spline evenly into the channels. Careful tension prevents wrinkles and ensures the mesh aligns with the frame. Excess material is trimmed for a clean finish.

4

Step 4: Quality Check

Final Inspection

Our technicians verify that the screen is taut, the corners are secure, and the finished product fits your window opening properly. If you need custom mesh—solar, pet-resistant, or heavy-duty—we have options in stock.

Screen Material Options

We stock a variety of screening materials to meet different needs and budgets:

Fiberglass Screening

Most economical option, resists corrosion and won't unravel. Perfect for standard residential use.

Aluminum Screening

Stronger and more durable than fiberglass. Ideal for high-traffic areas and provides excellent visibility.

Bronze Screening

Premium option offering superior strength and longevity. Develops an attractive patina over time.

PetScreen® - Pet Resistant

Seven times stronger than regular screening. Resists tears and damage from dogs and cats.

Solar/Sun Control Screening

Blocks up to 90% of sun's heat and glare while maintaining visibility and airflow.

Heavy-Duty Screening

Extra-thick mesh for maximum durability in high-wear applications.

DIY Tips for Handy Homeowners

If you prefer to try repairs yourself, here are our professional tips:

  • Set up a stable work area using a screen table or secure piece of plywood
  • Remove the old spline with a screwdriver or awl and lift out damaged mesh
  • Choose the right mesh and spline for your frame size—bring a sample to our store if unsure
  • Lay new mesh over the frame with an extra inch or two around edges
  • Roll in spline starting from the longest side, maintaining even tension
  • Trim excess mesh with a sharp utility knife for a clean finish

However, professional service saves time and eliminates the risk of miscuts or loose screens—especially on large or multi-story windows.
